Watch the 2024 PGA Championship for Less with Sling TV: Par for the Course on Affordable Streaming!

Last Updated:

The 2024 PGA Championship promises epic drives, edge-of-your-seat finishes, and plenty of drama. All that major golf action is coming at you on Thursday, May 16 through Sunday, May 19 on ESPN and CBS, and if you want to stream it for the lowest possible price you should sign up for Sling TV and Paramount+ Premium.

In a hurry? The cheapest way to watch the whole Championship is with Sling Orange (50% off $40.00/mo for your first month) and Paramount+ with SHOWTIME ($11.99/mo with a 1-week free trial), so you’ll have access to the two channels you need: ESPN and CBS.

First held in 1916, this year marks the 106th edition of the PGA Championship. The annual tournament is the second of the four major championships in men’s pro golf – the first being The Masters and the last two the U.S. Open (Sling TV guide) and the Open Championship. As well as being an integral part of the PGA Tour, it’s also an official stop on the European and Japan Golf Tours.

The event takes place over four days, with 18 holes per day. The winner is awarded the Wanamaker Trophy, named for Rodman Wanamaker, a founder of the PGA of America. Walter Hagen and Jack Nicklaus are tied at five apiece for most PGA Championship wins.

The venue changes each year, though it usually rotates around a few highly exclusive courses. Last year it was played on the East Course of the Oak Hill Country Club in Pittsford, New York, just outside of Rochester. This year it will be hosted by Valhalla Golf Club in Louisville, Kentucky – the first time it’s been at Valhalla in a decade.

Watching the PGA Championship on Sling TV

Streaming the morning coverage of the tournament is easy with Sling TV – all the action is broadcast on ESPN, which is included with the Sling Orange base plan for $40.00/mo. Since the afternoon coverage airs on CBS, you’ll require a different service to stream it live.

Golf fans have several options for watching CBS online without cable, depending on their location and preference. The first is with an HD antenna, which is cheap and simple to set up indoors. An antenna will provide all the major networks broadcast throughout most of the country, plus many more depending on your location. Sling TV even gives its users an antenna for free if they pre-pay for two months’ service – our guide to watching local channels on Sling TV has more information.

The second option is to sign up for Paramount+ with SHOWTIME (deal details), CBS’s parent company’s streaming service. This version of its Premium plan includes a live stream of most of CBS’s live sports and a feed of your local CBS station, for just $11.99/mo. It comes with a seven-day free trial, so you could watch the PGA Championship weekend for free if that’s all you want the subscription for.

This combination of streaming services is a perfect way to watch the entire PGA, as the ESPN/CBS broadcast arrangement continues through the rest of the PGA events until 2030. And when golf isn’t on, you’ll have one of the biggest streaming libraries of any service full of shows and specials from CBS, Nickelodeon, MTV, BET, Smithsonian, and Comedy Central. Not to mention the entire back-catalog of Paramount Studios movies.

You could also sign up for a service that carries both CBS and ESPN. This option would be simpler, but not cheaper: the cheapest provider to carry both channels is currently Hulu + Live TV, which is $76.99/mo. Sling Orange at $40.00/mo combined with Paramount+ SHOWTIME at $11.99 is still far below that.

Golfers Competing in the 2024 PGA Championship

The full field list of all the participants in this year’s PGA Championship has not yet been announced. Below is the field from last year’s event. “CFPT” denotes members of the Corebridge Financial PGA Team, a group of PGA professional players.

The top five golfers on the PGA leaderboard — Jon Rahm, Scottie Scheffler, Rory McIlroy, Patrick Cantlay, and Xander Schauffele — were all registered to play. Scottie Scheffler is the current favorite to win the 2024 PGA Championship, having won four of his five previous tournaments.

Other notable attendees included Jason Day, the winner of the AT&T Byron Nelson tournament, and Justin Thomas, 2022’s PGA Champion at Southern Hills. Multiyear winner Tiger Woods was recovering from ankle surgery and didn’t play.

FAQ

What is LIV Golf?

LIV Golf is a rival golf tour to the PGA Tour, with its own series and events. It’s experimenting with different rules and formats, such as a points-based system of promotion and relegation. To date, it has signed several very high-profile golfers, including Phil Mickelson, Brooks Koepka, Dusty Johnson, and Annika Sorenstam.

Why is LIV Golf the source of so much drama?

The PGA Tour has threatened its members with sanctions for playing in LIV events without the PGA’s permission. Several PGA members, starting with Kevin Na, have resigned from the PGA in order to play in LIV events. The reasons are complex and depend on who you ask, but the PGA’s position is that LIV is drawing away talent and sponsorship from the organizations that have made golf what it is today. Meanwhile, LIV’s opinion is that golfers should be able to play for whom they please.

How are LIV Golf members able to play in the PGA Championship?

LIV Golf members can play in the four majors, none of which are owned or operated by the PGA Tour. The PGA Championship is organized by the PGA of America, a separate entity that hasn’t had ties to the PGA Tour since 1968. There’s already been friction at The Masters earlier this year, which had a number of LIV Golf players participating, and Brooks Koepka almost won.

A LIV win at one of the majors would make it much harder for the PGA Tour to continue to try to shut LIV out.

How can I watch other major golf tournaments?

We have specific guides for the biggest tournaments, including the Grant Thornton Invitational:

Where can I watch college golf?

The NCAA Division I Golf Championships are on the Golf Channel. The 2023 tournaments for both men and women are at the Grayhawk Golf Club in Scottsdale, Arizona. You can find more information, including a schedule and list of teams, in our guide to the DI Men’s Golf Championship on Sling TV.
